I participated in writing the introduction, conclusion, and portions of the body paragraphs of a research study with Professor Yen Han Lee at UCF. The objective of our study was “Understanding how behavioral changes in fruit and vegetable consumption may affect sleep quality and duration among Chinese older adults.” This study opened my perspective on research and nutrition. It was an honor to be a part of and is currently in the process of being published.

HSC 4906: Independent Study

Faculty mentor: Danielle Webster Ph.D Department of Health Sciences University of Central Florida

There were two parts to this course and both are very impactful to my values and my career as a whole.

The first part of this course was a collaborative STEM lecture that my classmates and I worked on under the SOSA organization. We reached out to schools with students ages 8-14, some of which were from Jamaica. And we gave an interactive presentation on zoom where we taught them about renewable energy. This experience was beyond rewarding. To see your work come to life and listen to kids engaging and answer questions is truly an exhilarating experience.

The second portion of this course was a non-profit building exercise. Each student worked throughout the semester to create their own non-profit that they were passionate about. The non-profit I created was an after school based organization focused on girls ages 11-17. My mission was to empower young women to overcome the challenges of adolescence by fostering self confidence, resilience, and a positive outlook on life. The organization would provide a supportive community where girls can embrace their individuality, build healthy relationships, and develop the tools they need to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Through workshops and team building exercises we would teach the importance of growth and certain chapters of their lives, along with the importance of routine, physical health, mental health, and healthy coping mechanisms.
